SARAO is inviting innovators, entrepreneurs, SMMEs and community members to the Global Entrepreneurship Celebration. During this, SARAO will launch the Karoo Innovation Challenge, the aim of the Karoo Innovation Challenge is to foster a culture of entrepreneurship and collaboration by generating innovative ideas that provide solutions to pressing societal issues.
The event will run from the 14th of November 2022 – 18th of November 2022 at the Sassa Hall in Carnarvon. You are invited to come listen and watch the finalists pitch their ideas that they believe will benefit the community.

The aim of the Karoo Innovation Challenge is to foster a culture of entrepreneurship and collaboration by generating innovative ideas that provide solutions to pressing societal issues and have an economic benefit.
The finalists and winners will receive free pitching training by the NYDA, access to incubation space and business development to support the ideas.
The winners will receive a cash prize, incubation space and business development support.

Ms Apiwe Hotele – Head Judge
A visionary, award-winning Senior Technology Commercialisation Specialist, with a MSc in Electrical Engineering, Apiwe Hotele retains over seven years of hands-on experience within the engineering field. Passionate about facilitating socio-economic opportunities, Apiwe has encouraged entrepreneurship and local economic growth in the Rural Northern Cape, by initiating and leading the Karoo Enterprise Development Programme – a key initiative of the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory’s (SARAO) Enterprise Development Programme; Apiwe is the founder of Enlighten Edu – a platform to provide work to exceptional tutors, aid school learners in enhancing their performance in mathematics and science, and lighten the administrative burden for tutoring companies. She has received a number of awards, she was listed as one of Mail&Guardian’s 200 Young South Africans, listed by News24 as one of the 100 young Mandela, and was named as one of the top inspiring women in ICT by the kingdom of the Netherlands through the SA embassy and CoCreateSA. She was recognised by the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) as a trailblazer, won the Accenture Rising Star Award under the ICT (Telecoms & Technology) category and was recently acknowledged by Inside Education as one of the 100 Shining Stars in South Africa.

Guest Judge – Mr B Hoorn
Rev B Hoorn was born in Carnarvon. He attended the Dutch Reformed Mission School, later he went to Beaufort West for high school. He studied at the University of Western Cape and graduated with BA(HONS)HDE and Dip Theology. He served as a teacher for 44 years. First year 1975 at Carel Van Zyl Primary. Retired after 20 years as the principal in 2016 of Carnarvon, Primary He is an ordained minister of the African Methodist Episcopal church.
Guest Judge – Ms A Slambee
My name is Ashley Pearl Slambee, I am 33 years old. I live in Brandvlei in the Northern Cape. I work at Hantam Municipality as Assistant Librarian.iam a very hardworking and disciplined person. I like to do things on my own and can think out of the box . I also do Library programs at the school and kindergarten. I am also involved in Usiko as a Facilitator where we offer different programs at Brandvlei Primary School and High School. Usiko gives programs to Grade 7, 9 and 11 learners. Usiko also took the Grade 9 learners to the Cape in September school holidays, to have different experiences. I am also involved in our church. Harvest time community based church where we do different roles in the community. I registered my business in 2017 with the help of SKA .I currently own a printing business where I sell T-shirts, cups, watches,coasters and can print on all materials. I really like working with my hands and the printing work is my great love.I like to work with the community and like to work with children

I am Hendrieka Royen, a well-known small business woman member in Williston, I sing in a singing group for 40 years where we perform at different events and entertain people, I also do Decor as well as food planning at parties and large receptions, I like to do motivational talks and children protection.
