About the Position
SARAO has an exciting career opportunity for an NEC4 Supervisor – Geotechnical to join our Civil & Structures team and will be supported by the project team.
- Responsible for feasibility studies, design verification, supervising, monitoring, planning and controlling the development and implementation of the Civil and Structures divisional objectives
- Assist in technical planning, overseeing and reviewing the work of the contractors’ design and construction team during the design phase and thereafter on site during the construction of the project
- Support organisational activities through the provision of specialist civil engineering support
- Assume responsibility for, and ensuring compliance to, the accepted design, by the Contractors Design team. Ensuring that the design and on-site activities comply with all of SARAO and SKAO’s L3 requirements, specifications and Compliance & Verification matrices. Ensuring that the Contractor complies with the Clients SOW
- May be assigned technical supervisory responsibility for a smaller team of engineering/ technician staff for a development delivery
- Supports the other NEC4 Supervisor personnel and the Contractor with geotechnical advice on the engineering materials available on-site. Borrow Pit development and rehabilitation plans, interpretation of material tests, interpretation of geotechnical plans, interpretation of material tests, interpretation of geotechnical designs and foundation tests performed etc.

Role of the Supervisor in terms of NEC4:
- Checks that work is provided in accordance with the Scope and the applicable law
- Notification of Defects
- Witnesses tests and inspections
- Instruction to search
- Completion
- Defects date
- Defects Certificate
- Marking Equipment, plant and materials outside of the Working Areas
- Equipment on-site
- Quality assurance
- Communicate effectively in English (both written and verbally)
- Work in a team within SARAO and within the Civil and Structures Functional Group to deliver professional technical engineering design and implementation SOW as agreed with program managers
- Derive development and conceptualise Civil Engineering solutions based on higher level inputs
- Develop solutions for review to meet user and project requirements and present for design reviews (internal and external)
- Create design drawings using AutoCAD Civil 3D or similar drafting and Civil Design Software (Civil Designer).
- Perform geotechnical investigations and surveys, correctly interpret test results and geotechnical survey data. Keeping records of all materials used on site, application thereof and results of quality testing performed.
- Construction Monitoring of geotechnical investigations of medium to large projects
- Design and implementation of Civil Infrastructure Projects (roads, building structures, water and sanitation)
- Development and implementation of operational plans relevant to the functional area
- Compilation of Procurement documents (Contract, tender, specifications and scope of work, schedules of quantities and drawings)
- Project management and writing technical proposals/documents
- Developing and implementation of revised or new work methods, designs, policies and use of design tools relevant to the functional area
- Government procurement processes and supplier management
- ISO9001 Quality System
- Knowledge of national and International standards where applicable
- Proven competence in the use of AutoCAD Civil 3D or similar, Microsoft Word, Excel, Adobe, Google Drive and other database software
Minimum requirements
- The successful incumbent must have gained recognised technical expertise and experience gained in civil engineering infrastructure development projects (roads, water supply, sanitation and building infrastructure). The emphasis should be in a geotechnical field with Civil Engineering Materials laboratory experience
- More than 3 years’ experience in the planning, feasibility studies, design, supervising, laboratory testing and soil surveys, monitoring, and controlling the development and implementation of Civil Infrastructure Projects
- Must have spent a minimum of five (5) years on-site monitoring construction activities at a senior supervisory level
- Registration with SACNASP
- National Diploma in Civil Engineering – Geotechnical, (NQF Level 6) with a minimum of 11 years’ experience OR,
- B.Tech (Civil or relevant) or B.Eng with 8 – 10 years’ experience
