Call for proposals for workshops to be hosted in 2024 – SARAO’s Radio Astronomy Advancement Programme

, ,

The Human Capital Development (HCD) programme is pleased to announce that it is now accepting proposals for workshops to be hosted in 2024 in radio astronomy-relevant science and engineering areas under the Radio Astronomy Advancement Programme (RAAP).

This year, the RAAP programme will be opened up to the astronomy community in South Africa and we are expecting a more competitive programme for workshop funding compared to previous years.

Details on RAAP and the application process can be found in the attached “ 2024 Call for Proposals “ document or on the SARAO website using the link:

https://www.sarao.ac.za/students/radio-astronomy-advancement-programme/

The following points should be noted about RAAP:

1. The objective of RAAP is to fund (or co-fund) workshops that will contribute to the development of necessary scarce skills in radio astronomy-relevant science and engineering, within SARAO, the general radio astronomy community in South Africa, and in the SKA partner countries in Africa.
2. The decision of which skills should be included under the annual call for applications is made by the Chief Scientist and the Head of Engineering & Technology Development. This is done to ensure that training initiatives align with SARAO’s requirements / critical skills shortage. The relevant skills areas for workshops to be hosted in 2024 can be seen in the attached Call for Proposals document.
3. SARAO science and / or engineering staff, which includes permanent staff members and staff on fixed-term or joint contracts, may apply for RAAP grants.
4. The maximum grant per workshop / application is R750,000 for 2024.

The deadline for applications for RAAP is 31 October 2023.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions regarding RAAP.
