The CASPER workshop is a semi-annual workshop where FPGA, GPU, and general heterogeneous system programmers get together to discuss new instruments in radio astronomy, as well as the tools and libraries for developing and manipulating these instruments.
Various interested organisations around the world host the event; in 2027, the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO) will host the workshop in Cape Town, South Africa.
The workshop will run from the 19th – 23th April 2027, and consists of presentations in the morning, followed by various hands-on tutorials and break out sessions in the afternoon.
The organizing committee would like to present the opportunity for up to 100 persons to attend in person in Cape Town.

About the CASPER Workshop 2027
Speakers
Prof. Justin Jonas
Systems Scientist for the international SKA Observatory
Justin is a world-renowned radio astronomer and engineer from South Africa who played a pivotal role in developing the MeerKAT and Square Kilometre Array (SKA) telescopes. In May 2026, he was awarded an honorary doctorate in Engineering by the University of Pretoria for his contributions to the field. He served as the Chief Technologist for MeerKAT and also contributed to the Event Horizon Telescope project, which captured the first image of a black hole.
Prof Roger Deane
Director: IDIA
Dr. Roger Deane is an associate professor at the University of Pretoria. He completed his doctorate at the University of Oxford and returned to South Africa after being awarded Square Kilometre Array postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Cape Town and Rhodes University.
