ASTRO-TOURISM GUIDE PROGRAMME

The Carnarvon Astro Tourism Enterprise Development initiative was conceptualised by SARAO’s Stakeholder Engagement Division in 2018 as a potential socio-economic development project. Subsequently, SARAO, the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) and the Astronomical Society of Southern Africa (ASSA) hosted a number of sky viewing events in the surrounding communities to evaluate interest, among others.

The Carnarvon Astro Experience is a night-time experience and will be based on one of the following service offerings, with the option of experience customisation:

Sky-viewing with telescope
Dark-sky tour
Indigenous story-telling
Hand and foot massage with traditional !Xam medicinal herbs
Riel or traditional dance
A traditional donkey car ride
