SARAO’s Impact

South Africa’s investments in radio astronomy have realised a wide range of socio-economic benefits at both the local and national level. Internal and independent socio-economic impact assessments have concluded that NRF-SARAO has made significant positive impacts on developmental objectives, including substantial contributions towards education, skills development and employment opportunities, as well as scientific innovations that benefit society as a whole.

In order to maximise impact derived from investments in radio astronomy, SARAO has implemented a range of strategic programmes that contribute towards delivery of an ‘Impact Framework’.

The framework describes six impact pillars:

• Science products and research enterprise

• Innovation and industrial spillover

• Education and skills development

• Community and cultural investments

• Business and enterprise development

• Public good

Whilst the first two pillars are largely derived through SARAO exercising its mandate to design, deliver and operate radio astronomy infrastructure, the remaining four pillars are recognised by SARAO as often requiring key interventions before impact can be properly realised.
