Northern Cape Robotics team places 17th among more than 80 schools in FIRST LEGO League Open in USA

The Sharpshooters placed 17th out of more than 80 teams from around the world at the Western Edge FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Open in Long Beach, California.
The Sharpshooters, a robotics team from Carnarvon High School proudly sponsored by SARAO, represented South Africa with excellence at the Western Edge FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Open in Long Beach, California, held from 30 May to 1 June 2025.
Competing against 83 teams from around the world, the Sharpshooters secured an impressive 17th place in Robot Performance, demonstrating outstanding technical skill and innovation. Their achievement is even more remarkable as they were one of only three African teams at this prestigious international event.
The talented team members – Roswell Pipes, Tieties Frederico, Eugenio Nuwegeld, Farren Louw, Courtney Links, and Kilermo Gouws – come from five of the towns where SARAO is actively engaged in the Northern Cape, namely Brandvlei, Williston, Vosburg, Loxton, and Carnarvon. They were accompanied and supported by Chantel Mathison, SARAO’s Professional Officer in the SARAO Human Capital Development Programme’s Schools Programme, and their dedicated teachers, Jeanine Mathison and Wayne van Staden.
SARAO Managing Director Pontsho Maruping shared her congratulations: “We are incredibly proud of the Sharpshooters for showcasing South Africa’s talent on a global stage. Their hard work and achievement reflect the potential of our youth, especially from rural communities. This is exactly why SARAO invests in STEM education – to unlock opportunities and inspire future innovators. Well done to the team, their mentors, and everyone who supported this journey!”
This milestone highlights the power of investing in youth development and STEM education in underserved areas. The Sharpshooters have not only made their communities proud but have also proven that with opportunity and support, rural learners can compete with the best in the world.
Congratulations!
