Team Sharp Shooters from Carnarvon wins 3rd place for best robot performance at the First Lego League SA Nationals in Johannesburg
Three talented teams from Carnarvon, Northern Cape, proudly participated in the First Lego League South Africa Nationals Robotics Competition, held on 6-7 December 2024 at the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in Johannesburg.
Competing against 62 other teams from across South Africa, Team Sharp Shooters were among the standout performers securing an impressive 3rd place for Best Robot Performance with 325 points. They were joined by the Tesla Minions, who scored 215 points, and the Code Crushers, with 130 points, in tackling the exciting Submerged Challenge.
SARAO celebrates the determination, creativity, and teamwork of these young innovators. Their achievements reflect the incredible talent emerging from the Northern Cape, and we couldn’t be prouder!
Looking ahead, the spotlight now turns to the Africa Open where 108 international teams will compete in Cape Town from 7-9 May 2025. We can’t wait to see these bright minds take on the global stage!

The SARAO Robotics Programme is coordinated by the SARAO Human Capital Development Schools Programme, and has been running the Robotics Schools Programme in the Karoo since 2016. The aim is to develop and inspire an interest in STEM skills in the schools around the development of the MeerKAT radio telescope, a precursor to the Square Kilometre Array.
