Simphiwe Madlanga, SARAO Science Engagement Coordinator, accompanied the African Astronomical Society (AfAS) and International Astronomical Union General Assembly (IAU-GA) Legacy project Team last month to assist in distributing television sets to under-resourced schools.
The schools, situated in the Eastern Cape, were the beneficiaries of the equipment, which included smart television combos with wifi, webcams and Raspberry Pi gadgets. The television sets were used as part of the IAU-GA conference and exhibition that was held in Cape Town last year. As part of its legacy, AfAS donated the equipment to schools in different areas of the Eastern Cape which are typically rural and peri-urban schools that perform well even under socioeconomic and other constraints.
Madlanga represented SARAO and led the team on behalf of AfAS with a group of university students in the fields of Physics and Engineering, as a value-add for the learners to interact with positive role models in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics field.
