Parliamentary Portfolio Committee Visits SARAO’s New Cape Town Offices

The South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO) hosted members of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee (PPC) on Science, Technology and Innovation on Tuesday, 11 February 2025 at its Cape Town offices, taking the members on a tour of the new premises in Mowbray, Cape Town.

The PPC members started off the day at the South African Astronomical Observatory, after which they made their way to SARAO for a presentation by the SARAO Managing Director, Pontsho Maruping. The visitors were then taken on a tour of the SARAO control room, the radio frequency interference chamber, and the digitizer laboratory. The PPC delegation was joined by members of the Board of the National Research Foundation (NRF) led by Prof. Mosa Moshabela, Chairperson of the NRF Board, and high-level members from the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation, including the Chief Director for Astronomy, Takalani Nemaungani.

The PPC will undertake a visit to the Karoo site at the end of February 2025, where they will be hosted by the SARAO Northern Cape Stakeholder Engagement team.
