Introduction
The LEGO Schools Programme (also known as the Robotics Schools Programme) introduces STEM concepts to learners through fun activities using the LEGO Mindstorms Robotics kit. Training for the schools includes instruction on how to use the kit to build and program robots, how to work together as a team and how to effectively compete in the different competitions.
Background
In order to develop and inspire interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) skills in the schools around the development of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), the LEGO Schools Programme was started. The programme aims to inspire people’s interest in STEM by introducing the concepts through fun activities Starting in 2016 with 5 schools, the programme has grown over time to be involved with the following schools:
JJ Booysen Primary (Loxton)
Delta Primary (Vosburg)
Brandvlei Primary School (Brandvlei)

Each year grants are given to the schools involved for school refurbishment, which the LEGO Schools Programme is a component of. The LEGO Mindstorms kits, which are owned by SARAO, are loaned to the schools through a contractual agreement. Schools can either use their own laptops or loan some from SARAO.
