CNC Minimill Machine

Background

The Minimill project, developed by the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO) Electronics team, aims to bridge the gap in accessibility to CNC milling technology. This initiative addresses the high cost and complexity typically associated with standard CNC machines in South Africa. The target audience includes technical education colleges, emerging enterprises, Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), and makerspaces, thereby facilitating practical skills development and stimulating local manufacturing expansion.

Technology Overview

The Minimill is a desktop compact CNC milling machine with high precision, suitable for small workshops and classrooms. It supports automated workflows through user-friendly software and is built from quality components for durability. The machine operates with common digital fabrication design files, facilitating ease of prototyping and production.

Benefits

  • Affordable pricing suitable for educational and small business budgets
  • High precision milling essential for quality manufacturing and prototyping
  • Compact size suitable for desktop use, making it accessible to diverse users
  • Local support and manufacturing on components and software

Applications

  • CNC machining training in TVET colleges aligned with industry skills
  • Prototyping and manufacturing for MSMEs and startups
  • Shared access machines in makerspaces and innovation hubs
  • Small batch production for light industrial users requiring reliable precision

Opportunities

South Africa’s large technical education sector, thousands of MSMEs, startups, and expanding innovation hubs represent a strong market for the Minimill. SARAO is performing market research and pilot programs to further refine and promote this technology as a key enabler for digital fabrication education and small-scale manufacturing, supporting economic growth and innovation locally.
