As the host nation for the International Astronomical Observatory General Assembly in 2024, South Africa is proud of its rich astronomical legacy and dynamic scientific community. This IAU General Assembly not only facilitates the exchange of innovative research but also nurtures international collaborations essential for tackling the fundamental questions of our cosmos.

Nestled in the boundless plateaus encircled by dolerite-capped mountains of the Karoo and exploring the vastness of the Universe, the MeerKAT telescope is an example of what can be achieved through innovation and collaboration to drive South Africa on a journey beyond just reaching new heights in knowledge. This is also the site where half of the global megatelescope, SKA-MID is being constructed.

While the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory takes on the mysteries of the Universe, we do so not only at the forefront of radio astronomy but also spark curiosity in future generations to explore science and engineering letting them know that our discoveries reach beyond any scientific field into inspiring awe for everyone who looks up.

This booklet is not just a mere collection of facts and figures; it’s an ode to the creativity, ambition and unrivalled spirit that pushes mankind toward understanding its place in our Universe. Here is to hope that it encourages you all to come and join us, as we set out to explore the Universe and to expand the frontiers of human knowledge. The Karoo itself is a place where the energy of its vastness and humbling emptiness, plus evocative beauty sings to man’s small insignificance in the Universe.
