SARAO News #01 2017
Two Young Professional Development Programme protégés from SKA SA presented their work to more than 300 delegates at the SKA Engineering Meeting held in Rotterdam, The Netherlands in June 2017.
Katleho Madisa and Athanaseus Ramaila, who both joined the Control and Monitoring team at SKA SA in 2016, presented their work on a Local Monitoring and Control (LMC) Interface Simulator Framework.
The two YPs have been working under supervision at SKA SA whilst collaborating with Indian colleagues as part of the INDO-SA Flagship programme, to develop the LMC Interface Simulator Framework. Ramaila performed a demonstration and presentation, while Madisa presented in poster format.
It was the first time attending an SKA Engineering Meeting for both of them since joining SKA SA. “The meeting made me realise that the SKA is one of the gigantic world class projects with a large community of engineers and scientists with a great range of expertise. It was also exciting to see how much effort is being put into the project and I networked with some of the engineers and scientists in the field. It was very exciting to interact with people from different regions of the world with different skills and cultures,” says Ramaila.
Madisa says that soon after their presentations some of the colleagues were using the simulator library already.
“We have been working on the Local Monitoring and Control (LMC) Simulator Framework Prototype since last year, a tool that we hope the SKA Consortia Elements can make use of to develop Tango device simulators for their Local and Monitoring systems. Our presentations were well received and just a few days after the meeting people were starting to make use of our simulator library,” says Madisa.
The 2017 SKA Engineering Meeting took place from 12-16 June 2017 in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, comprising a range of meetings and several diplomats attending the social events.
