Simphiwe Madlanga – Coordinator: Science Engagement

Top 200 Young South Africans” in 2018 by the Mail & Guardian newspaper, Simphiwe has devoted his career to demystifying science, explaining astronomy and its benefits to communities across his home country. In 2024, he was invited into membership of the Golden Key International Honour Society for his outstanding results in the MPhil Space Studies he completed in 2023.

Prior to that he received the chance to study in London on a prestigious UK government Chevening Scholarship, researching the societal impact of the SKA project in South Africa. Simphiwe is a proponent of lifelong learning, inspiring young people through science and the opportunities that exist in the Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) career fields.

He is a product of an an avid contributor to the South African National System of Innovation (NSI), having started his career as part of the NYS volunteers programme guided by the Youth into Science Strategy of the erstwhile Department of Science and Technology in 2010.
