Land Rezoning

Rezoning of land occurs when the classification assigned for the use of a piece of land is adjusted so that it permits the desired new purpose.

Rezoning of NRF-owned Land

The SARAO land acquisition programme secured land for the construction and protection of the SKA Radio Telescope.  A total of 135 245 hectares comprising of 40 portions of land were secured.  This land stretches over two municipal jurisdictions and is currently zoned for agriculture as a primary use in terms of the by-laws of the Kareeberg and Karoo Hoogland Municipalities.

On the 27th March 2020, the Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment declared the NRF-owned land as the Meerkat National Park as a further step to support conservation of the area.

To support the construction of the SKA Radio Telescope and to align the land use of the NRF-owned land to National Park,  the identified land portions shall be rezoned through an application process to the local municipalities.

Applications to Kareeberg and Karoo Hoogland Municipalities:

Published Notifications of Application for Rezoning

In terms of the public participation process, advertisements were placed in the Noord-Wester to invite local communities to comment on the rezoning application to the respective municipalities. The notices have also been strategically placed around the NRF-owned land boundaries to further notify communities of the process.

Rezoning of ERF 1883 Carnarvon

Erf 1883 in Masolke Street Carnarvon was acquitted by the NRF as part of the land acquisition process.  SARAO has submitted a rezoning application for this property to utilise it as a SARAO Artisan Training Centre.
