Set in the Karoo town of Carnarvon, the “Mission MeerKAT” comic follows Hannah, an aspiring school reporter who investigates a mysterious convoy of trucks. Her curiosity leads her to stow away on a vehicle to a remote construction site, where she discovers the MeerKAT radio telescope and meets a talking meerkat and bat-eared fox who explain how the “dishes” listen to radio waves from space. After being safely returned home by a scientist named Naledi, Hannah attends a school presentation where she learns that the telescope—designed and built in South Africa—helps astronomers study galaxies, stars, and black holes while paving the way for the even larger Square Kilometre Array (SKA). Ultimately, Hannah fulfills her dream by publishing her story in the local newspaper, inspired by the scientific achievements occurring in her own backyard.
