Introduction to robotics session held with Sol Plaatje supported schools in Northern Cape

The SARAO Schools Programme, managed by the Human Capital Development department, held an introduction to robotics session with schools in the Northern Cape from 23 to 25 March 2023.

The schools were selected by Sol Plaatje University in Kimberley in an effort to implement the robotics programme in the schools. The session was attended by representatives from Sol Plaatje University, Tetlanyo High School, Vuyolwethu Secondary School, Technical High, Kimberley Boys High, as well as a representative from the Northern Cape Department of Education.

During the training sessions, topics covered include competition information, sensors, chassis and gears, basic robot building, force sensor and touch sensor, distance sensor and ultrasonic sensor; as well as an introduction to Spike Prime, Mindstorms EV3: Robot Hub and Software Pseudocode.

The SARAO Schools Programme has a very robust and successful robotics programme, with teams from the Northern Cape having made it to national and international competitions in the past with great success. Later this month a team from Carnarvon High School will be participating in the FIRST LEGO league International Open Competition in Marrakech, Morocco where it will be one of 68 FIRST LEGO League teams from 50 countries.

The session was attended by representatives from Sol Plaatje University, Tetlanyo High School, Vuyolwethu Secondary School, Technical High, Kimberley Boys High, as well as a representative from the Northern Cape Department of Education.
