The SARAO Cybersecurity unit built forth on its collaboration with the Sefako Makgatho University (SMU) Department of Computer Science and Information Technology (CSIT), by conducting a successful cybersecurity workshop to demonstrate the real world application, implementation and operations of Cybersecurity principles.

The SARAO cybersecurity team, David Phaswana, Justice Nkoana and Zenande Msongelo was hosted by the SMU organisers Ntsoka Mathiba, Dr Alex Dandadzi, Dr Taurai Hungwe and Tsakani Ndobe.

The workshop was conducted on 25 and 26 September 2024 at the SMU Ga-Rankuwa campus, structured in two groups with the first group consisting of CSIT Final Year students and the second group of postgraduate students.

The workshop covered various topics that affect every individual daily such as cybersecurity, hacking, cybersecurity definitions, phishing, internet, social media and email best practices, malware, vulnerabilities, network security, mobile device security, public usage of wifi, remote working and security at home, cloud security; and threat intelligence and counterintelligence.

The aim of the workshop was to publicise the SARAO brand and encourage attendees to follow the SARAO platforms; raise cybersecurity awareness and its reality to attendees; empower students with the practicality of what they are studying in cybersecurity and bringing it to reality; and invoking an interest in the field of cybersecurity and cybersecurity research.

The team also explored further collaboration possibilities to include SARAO Cybersecurity, SMU CSIT and CSIR Defence and Security Cluster – Cybersecurity, with a further workshop scheduled for 27 to 29 November 2024 to unpack mutual collaboration goals.
