SARAO school bursary holders visit the South African Large Telescope (SALT) in Sutherland
A group of SARAO bursary recipients from Carnarvon High School visited the South African Large Telescope (SALT) in Sutherland, Northern Cape recently.
The 30 learners, who also visited the SKA site outside Carnarvon during the Public Site visit on 1 February 2023, visited SALT on 13 and 14 May 2023 to experience optical telescopes and learn about its use and functioning. The history and the countries behind the instruments were also relayed to the learners.
“The visit to the SAAO site and the talks about the different wavelengths were very important because this topic is part of their school curriculum and it allows the learners to relate and see how wavelengths are used in practice,” says Chantel Mabaleng, SARAO Professional Officer for the SARAO Schools Programme.
