What are the key responsibilities of SARAO?
SARAO is a national facility of South Africa’s National Research Foundation (NRF). It is responsible for managing South Africa’s strategic investments in radio astronomy, including:
• Leading South Africa’s participation in the international Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project;
• Development and operation of the MeerKAT radio telescope and Karoo site;
• Operation of the Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomy Observatory (HartRAO); and
• A Human Capital Development (HCD) programme that partners with universities and institutions to develop a diverse community of scientists, engineers and technicians in radio astronomy
