Sarah Buchner – Science Operations Lead, SARAO

Sarah Buchner is the Science Operations Lead at the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO), where she oversees the scheduling of scientific activities for the MeerKAT Radio Telescope. Her work focuses on pulsar astronomy, particularly in studying magnetized rotating neutron stars and searching for gravitational waves.

In her role, Buchner has been instrumental in managing observation projects not only at MeerKAT but also at the Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomy Observatory (HartRAO) and in Antarctica. She has contributed to the development of software for processing radio astronomy data, including “basket-weaving” software for mapping sky scans and data extraction tools for pulsar timing.

Buchner is also a core member of the Pulsars Science Working Group of the Square Kilometre Array Observatory (SKAO), collaborating with international experts to advance pulsar research.

Beyond her research, Buchner engages in public outreach to promote radio astronomy. She has delivered talks, such as the one at the Gordon’s Bay Yacht Club, where she discussed the significance of MeerKAT and its role in elevating South Africa’s status in the global astronomical community.
